JOHANNES – Viennese Blend

JOHANNES embodies the true Budapester spirit, Viennese style, transitioning from double-stitched to frame-stitched, complete with a classic five-hole lacing.

Like all Budapesters, it opens with a Derby cut and allows for adjustable lacing, making it ideal for feet with a high instep. The Austrian last also slims the foot, creating a cultural encounter rich in tradition and added value.

After all, Austria and Hungary were linked in the Austro-Hungarian Empire for half a century until 1919. However, the subtle distinctions were always carefully maintained.

The JOHANNES model is made in width G½, which corresponds to a normal, medium width.

Brogue

The brogue owes its fame to the distinctive perforation pattern (English: Broguing). In the full brogue, this includes the wingtip with the lyre (perforation ornament), as well as the narrow perforated strip along the edges of the heel cap and quarters. By design, the brogue features a piece cut (Oxford lacing). Embossed, rather than smooth leather, and a double sole can further emphasize the sporty-rustic character of this versatile shoe classic.

Until a hundred years ago, the brogue was a stylish weekend and leisure shoe. Today, it still holds that role but also accompanies suits and sporty combinations. Only at black-tie events and those once deemed as such, like the opera, theater, weddings, and funerals, should perforations be executed in homeopathic doses, i.e., as a quarter brogue.

The shoe's history is often explained with a legend: Scots and Irish reportedly drilled holes in their rural footwear as a drainage mechanism, to dry out the shoe and foot after the Sunday walk through the moor and before entering the church. This is improbable. The frugal Scots likely walked barefoot, saving the shoes for church. Nonetheless, the moor story persistently endures.

The full brogue traditionally combines the lyre-wingtip with a five-hole lacing. Fashion variations may alter the number of lacing holes. As a rule, the more pronounced the holes and the more textured the surface, the sportier the shoe.
