JULIAN – Blücher on Viennese Last

Our robust Blücher JULIAN is set on a double leather sole and crafted over a Viennese last – logically. The Austrians were allies with the Prussians in the resistance against Napoleon.

During the liberation wars against Napoleon, Field Marshal Blücher was hit by a "spent ball" in 1814, which damaged his boot more than his leg. Blücher commented, "Well, that's bad. There are more doctors than cobblers in our ranks." The marshal is said to have popularized a sturdy half-boot among the troops at that time. That's why a Derby without added quarters still bears his name today.

The JULIAN model is made in width G½, corresponding to a standard, medium width.

The Blücher is not a shoe for show-offs. Instead, it's loved by perfectionists among pragmatists. With good reason: Its formal reduction and practical Derby cut serve utmost utility. Even the quarters don't connect the heel piece with the vamp but are durably stitched onto the one-piece upper. This design grants the Blücher stylistic versatility. From leisure to easy business with denim, corduroy, and khaki, it fits any outfit. Yet, its almost military sternness might relate to its origin story or the tales told about it.

The Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher is said to have introduced this ascetic shoe to his soldiers during the Napoleonic liberation wars. A legend? What's certain is that Napoleon's soldiers conquered half of Europe in simple Derby shoes two hundred years ago. "Learning from Napoleon's troops means learning to win," Blücher might have thought back then – evidently with effect.
