JOHANNES – Viennese Melange

JOHANNES in TdM (Testa di Moro) suede is a genuine Budapester, Viennese style. Frame-stitched rather than double-stitched, it comes with a classic five-hole lacing. (TdM stands for Testa di Moro, which is the Italian term for dark brown in the world of leather.)

Like all Budapesters, it opens with a Derby cut and has adjustable lacing. This is ideal for feet with a high instep. The Austrian last also gives it a slender appearance. It represents a cultural encounter enriched with tradition and added value.

After all, Austria and Hungary were linked in the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1919 for half a century. Yet, they always also cherished the fine differences.

This model, with its modern suede and rubber sole, is the perfect companion for gentlemen who don't want to compromise on style even in the wet and cold seasons.

Brogue

The Brogue is widely known for its distinctive perforation pattern (English: Broguing). In the full brogue, this includes the wingtip with the lyre (perforation ornament), as well as the narrow perforation strip along the edges of the heel cap and quarters. By design, the Brogue features a piece construction (Oxford lacing). Embossed, rather than smooth leather, and a double sole further emphasize the sporty-rustic character of this versatile shoe classic.

Until a hundred years ago, the Brogue was a stylish weekend and leisure shoe. Today, it still fulfills that role but now also accompanies suits and sporty combinations. Only at black-tie events and those that once were, such as opera, theater, weddings, and funerals, should perforations be executed in homeopathic doses, i.e., as a quarter brogue.

The shoe's history is often explained with a legend: Scots and Irish purportedly drilled holes in their rural footwear as a drainage mechanism, to dry out the shoe and foot after the Sunday walk through the moor and before entering the church. This seems unlikely. More plausible is that the frugal Scots walked barefoot, saving their shoes for church. Nonetheless, the moor story persists stubbornly.

The full Brogue traditionally combines the lyre wingtip with a five-hole lacing. Fashion variations may alter the number of lacing holes. As a rule, the more pronounced the holes and the more textured the surface, the sportier the shoe.
